1. FundamentBefore any artwork or development can be done we need to have an idea what game we are going to create. This sounds very obvious, but it is the fundament of every game.
This said, I want to show you that any idea can be used. It does not need to be original.
2. Origin of the ideaIn 1981 (yes, I am that old) I was given a small present for my birthday: a Tandy Pocket Repeat. This is a Simon clone. The gameplay was so simple and so addictive! A short explanation: a sequence of lights and sounds is shown by the toy. This sequence has to be repeated by the player. If done well, the machine adds one light and tone to the end of the sequence which becomes more difficult this way. More information about this kind of game can be found on
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simon_(game)On
http://www.handheldmuseum.com/ I found the picture of the original toy shown here.
3. Create using FlashThis is the game I want to recreate in Flash. I searched the web and found some simple flash games, but none of them had the addictive gameplay of the small toy. I want to do better and show you how this can be accomplished.
4. ConclusionAny idea can be used as your game idea. You do not have to be the magic genius game guru to come up with a solid game idea. Just pick something from your past and try to think of it as a new game. That will do.
Some other options: I have bought a
book which sums up about 900 internet games. This is a dutch book, so not much of use for the most of you. Of course, the web is another great source.
5. What's nextThe next post will be about the artwork needed for the game using Photoshop. If you need to get up to speed before that, perhaps this book/digital classroom is something for you:
